The formal attire wedding invitation called for a shopping adventure. As we perused the suits for Steve I glanced over to see he had slipped into a jacket. Oh, my word, he looked AMAZING. I had grown so accustomed to t-shirt and khaki attire, the moment I spotted him in that suit jacket I was mesmerized.
To be quite honest, I was a bit shocked by my own reaction. I felt a sense of pride, claiming: “That’s my man!” As we dressed on the night of the wedding, I anticipated seeing him in his full outfit. I walked down the stairs and spotted him looking out the window. As he turned to greet me, I instantly melted. Weddings are romantic, and this became a fun evening fully attracted to my man!
When Samuel was on the mission to anoint a new king, he was sure Eliab was the LORD’s anointed. (I wonder if he was wearing a suit?)
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV)
If God looks at the heart, we too must consider the heart. Capital One Financial uses a memorable tagline in their commercials, “What’s in your wallet?” We tend to spend so much time and resources on our outward appearance, but the real question should be, “What’s in your heart?” Upon full examination, I am often lead to the reality of a wicked heart! It’s a routine effort to examine, confess and ask God to create in me a pure heart!
After David had sinned against God he cried out to Him:
10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalm 51:10 (NIV)
My attraction to Steve in his suit was fun but pales in comparison to his attractive servant’s heart. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go see if he will put back on his suit. What’s in your heart?
