Unexpected Rooftop Experience

We climbed a ladder to our rooftop to secure a tarp on our chimney.  A wind came through and blew our ladder over leaving us stranded on the roof and my response caught me off guard!

When the ladder fell against the ground, I began to laugh hysterically.

A few weeks prior, as we had been watching television, we discovered water leaking down our chimney.  It was a sight no one cares to see.  A roofer informed us the chimney needs sealed but the sealant must be applied to dry brick.  We had put a tarp around the chimney in hopes of protecting it from the rain long enough to dry out.  Now, almost two weeks later, it was 70 degrees in Kentucky in the middle of winter which means we could expect strong winds.  In addition to the wind, more rain was on the way!

We climbed the ladder to be sure the tarp around the chimney was still secure but neglected to secure the ladder.  When I heard the ladder fall, I broke out into laughter, but Steve immediately went into rescue mode!

He reached for his phone to discover he had not brought it to the rooftop.  Nor did I.  We looked around in hopes of a passerby neighbor, but no one was in sight.  Even if they were, what are the odds they would hear us so far down our long lane.  And neither of us are agile enough to even consider climbing off the roof.

Then Steve thought to use the s-hook on the end of the strap that was being used to secure the tarp.  He dangled it over the edge to fish for the ladder and it became the quick fix that got us off that roof!

But why did I laugh?  Not just because it was funny.  My laughter communicated my unwavering confidence in God and His ability to handle the possible troubles.  I wasn’t worried or fearful. I related to the excellent wife of Proverbs 31:25 who “laughs at the time to come.”

Or perhaps you can better relate to Abraham and Sarah who experienced laughter of unbelief (Genesis 17:17 & Genesis 18: 12 – 15).  Or has your laughter turned to mourning (James 4:9)?  Jesus  says, “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh” (Luke 6:21).

Are you facing a problem? Does it appear hopeless from every angle?  When we are walking in a true relationship with God, we can trust He does have a plan!
