Mary’s faith is proven remarkable by the words she spoke after the angel announced she would give virgin birth to Christ. “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” (Luke 1:34) Matthew Henry’s Commentary considers she was not questioning CAN it happen but she was questioning how it WOULD happen.
14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14 (KJV)
I suspect Mary was already familiar with the words of Isaiah but if she wasn’t, the angel’s words had made it clear. If the Messiah would be born a virgin and she was the chosen virgin, she then desired further instruction.
The angel’s response is a satisfactory answer, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you.” (Luke 1:35)
Mary is the only woman chosen to bear the Son of God through a virgin birth. Yet if you are a true believer in the Lord Jesus Christ you too have been invaded by the Holy Spirit. He has come upon you. Ever since I entered a relationship with Christ, the Holy Spirit has invaded every area of my life – even those areas I’ve tried to hide.
When God calls us to act, we must choose to act in faith. Rather than question if it can happen, we can take Mary’s example and ask how will it happen.
What has God specifically called you to do? Ask Him to give you instructions on what He would have you to do next and trust the Holy Spirit to come upon you and the power of the Highest to overshadow you for nothing will be impossible with God.
